H-Coal® and H-Coal®TS Services

The H-Coal® line of services converts coal directly into liquid fuels. Coal conversion typically reaches 95%. It provides a typical yield of four to five barrels of oil per ton of coal on a moisture-free basis – including coal gasification that supplies hydrogen. The major products are: high naphthenic naphtha, diesel fuel with good cold flow properties and low sulfur fuel oil that can meet specifications after downstream reforming or hydroprocessing.

Technology description

H-Coal® service utilizes a commercially proven ebullated-bed reactor for direct conversion of coal to high quality distillate fuels. Coal is crushed and pulverized to finely sized particles, and mixed with recycle oil to make a slurry that can easily pass up and out of the reactor with the liquid and gaseous products, while the much larger catalyst particles remain in the ebullated-bed reactor.

Extruded catalyst is periodically replaced in the reactor, without shutdown. It is only weakly prone to metal poisoning and can be regenerated.

The need for improved yield and selectivity have led to a two-stage catalytic coal liquefaction service called H‑Coal®TS  enabling the optimization of the operating conditions in each reactor.

H-Coal® and H‑Coal®TS (two stage) services are the result of extensive experience in the field of coal processing. Our research and development services can adapt the conversion system and the product yields for each specific client needs.

The H‑Coal®TS reactor system is superior to other thermal or slurry based catalyst systems currently under evaluation and it uses a fully commercially proven technology.

Unconverted residue can be utilized either as solid flakes or as additional feed to a gasification unit.

The environmental footprint of the liquefaction unit can be reduced using carbon capture and storage. Up to 80% of the CO2 can be captured.

In addition, drafting of plans, engineering design and reports, and installation commissioning services are provided by HTI based on its expertise in coal processing.
